For the history buff

  • Sip a latte and have a pastry at Il Caffé while you read up on local history.
  • Spend the morning with natural and transportation history by wandering Moss Island and Lock 17; interpretive plaques about potholes, nature, and the Canal system will give you a wealth of information.
  • Continue the theme with a history-inspired lunch at Ann St. Deli. Try the General Herkimer burger or the Lift Lock club sandwich. Walk outdoors and check out those 18th and 19th century industrial buildings - if the old walls could talk!
  • Grab a booklet at MVCA or The Stone Mill for a self-guided walking tour of historic homes.
  • Spend the afternoon wandering Little Falls and enjoying the amazing architecture.
  • Drive over to Beardslee Castle for dinner and keep your eyes open for ghosts - there have been many sightings!

  • Have brunch at Casey's at the Knights Inn and pick up a sandwich at Carney's deli.
  • Ride your bike or drive over the Herkimer Home where volunteers will take you on a tour and also reenact life in the 1800s.
  • Enjoy a picnic on the grounds.
  • Stop over at the Little Falls Museum, a historic site itself, which also has an informative and helpful staff and is packed with artifacts.
  • Wander through the stacks and exhibits at Little Falls library. Read up on local history in one of their comfortable sitting areas and enjoy the comprehensive collections of butterflies and "Little Falls Diamonds".
  • Enjoy a multi-course meal of fine French cuisine at Canal Side Inn.

  • Get some eggs and traditional hash browns at Crazy Otto's diner.
  • Start your day with services at any of our beautiful, historic churches.
  • Grab soup, a sandwich and an ice cream cone at Ole Sal's.
  • Spend the afternoon wandering leisurely through the Stone Mill and Antiques Centers, looking for historic items.
  • For dinner, feast on the delicious Italian, Mexican and American fare at Piccolo Cafe, once the city's train station, in years gone by.
